When content in Plex has a different language code for the audio track to the preferred language of the user, Plex will automatically display subtitles in the preferred language if it can find them. In order for this to work, the language code of the forced subtitles must be the same as the audio language of the item being played, and the preferred language in Plex is also the same. Plex sees this file and selects it automatically when you watch. So a subtitle file containing only those passages is created with the name My Violent Film.en.forced.srt. But if there are scenes with, say, Russian gangsters talking to each other, you will want subtitles to appear when they speak. It's there to provide translation for foreign language dialogue that appears.įor example, in a film that's in English, you may not want subtitles for the English dialogue. So go through your plex client app settings and TV settings, and make sure there isn't a checkbox somewhere for subtitles or captions. I've got a TCL smart TV with Roku built in, and in the TV's own settings, you have to enable Captions before non-burned in subtitles will appear in plex (since setting it up, that plex client has actually updated to give you the Captions option for your TV within the plex settings, as well). If it shows "forced" on that page but they still aren't showing up when you play the movie on your TV, it could be a TV setting. So if it's english subtitles for the movie Constantine, the subtitle would be named "Constantine (2005).". The subtitle needs to be named the same as the movie, followed by a 2 or 3 character country code, followed by the word Forced, with periods in between. Put both the movie and the subtitle in a sub folder with the same name as the movie file. Again, your subtitles need to be in SRT format. Things are a little simpler if you don't mind having an external subtitle file. Other formats might work, but I don't know for sure. Also, make sure that your subtitles are SRT format. That info can all be edited in the Header section of the app. Also in MKVToolNix, make sure that that audio track is your default/primary audio (if you've got more than 1 audio track, anyway), and make sure to turn on the Forced flag for that subtitle track. Use an app called MKVToolNix to set the language for both the subtitle and the corresponding audio track to be the same. MP4's have a forced subtitle flag, but plex won't recognize it. If you want the subtitles embedded in the file, it HAS to be an MKV file. I've only found 2 reliable ways to get forced subtitles to automatically play with plex.
